A professional transportation planner is a professional engaged in the practice of transportation planning, relating to the transportation aspects of urban planning and infrastructure planning. A professional transportation planner is certified by one of two bodies in the United States: as a Certified Transportation Planner (CTP, AICP) by the American Institute of Certified Planners the professional institute of the American Planning Association or as a Professional Transportation Planner (PTP) by the Transportation Professional Certification Board, Inc. an autonomous body affiliated with the Institute of Transportation Engineers. A select number of transportation planners achieve both certifications to demonstrate their expertise to the public and potential clients. In the United States, only a small fraction of practicing transportation planners hold either the PTP or CTP credential. In the United Kingdom professional transportation planners are certified as a Transport Planning Professional (TPP) and are members of Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Transport Planning Society. The TPP certification is an equivalent designation as the Charter Engineer in the United Kingdom. In Canada, certain provinces restrict the use of the title Professional Planner (PP) to those licensed planners who have passed both an exam and an accredited degree. == Professional Certification by the Transportation Professional Certification Board == Additionally, the Professional Transportation Planner (PTP) is a certification recognized within the USA, sponsored by the Transportation Professional Certification Board, Inc. which is affiliated with the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Prior to taking the required exam, an applicant must have an accredited master’s or Ph.D. degree in planning or transportation with three years of professional work experience in transportation planning, or have an accredited bachelor’s degree in a transportation, or planning course of study and four years of professional work experience in transportation planning, or have an accredited bachelor’s degree in a non-transportation, or non-planning course of study and five years of professional work experience in transportation planning. 〔 (PTP Requirements ).
